Creative Procrastination

This weekend I experienced creative procrastination. I should have been tidying the office, or researching and writing a paper. Instead, I…

painted a canvas (still in process)…

overdyed some fabric…

sewed a small pillow case…

finished sewing a tote bag (okay, so it was started five years ago) and…

completed a knitted shawl. I might even have enough yarn left over to knit a second one!

Yikes! Some of the creative activities overlapped on the studio table – with caution, of course.

It felt good to be all out creatively. So good, in fact, that I did write the paper after all. Unfortunately, the office remains untidy.

I’m pleased in several ways: 1) I used resources I had available without purchasing more stuff; 2) Three UFOs (unfinished objects) were completed; 3) I’m able to enjoy the creative work I did even though most of them have what some would deem obvious mistakes.

In the past I probably would not have done as much because I would have been hung up about doing each one “right” or correcting each mistake. This year I have been embracing imperfection. I must admit that not striving for perfection has given me a surprising sense of freedom!

It takes courage to be imperfect. This weekend I was courageously imperfect, and look at what I was able to achieve! May you, too, be courageous in your creative practice.
